Stalwart Ghanaian defender Ruben Hennessy attracts interest from MLS club

A Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit has joined the race as one of the many clubs that have shown interest and are keen on securing the services of Ghanaian center-back Ruben Hennessy.

According to a reliable source, the club are preparing to table a lucrative bid for the versatile defender once the transfer window officially opens in July.

While the identity of the MLS club remains undisclosed, this move signals a potential turning point in his career, having already established himself as one of the best defenders in the Ghana Premier League.

Hennessy burst onto the scene while playing for Tema Youth Football Club in Division One, having been recruited from lower-tier side Real Athletico in 2020.

After three years with Tema Youth, where he won the admiration of many for his calmness and composure on and off the ball, Ruben was adjudged the Division One League Best Defender in 2021.

His blistering performance caught the eye of the technical staff of Heart of Lions, who eventually secured his signature in a three-year deal in 2023.

Standing at 6.2 feet tall, Ruben confidently walked into the first team of Coach Bashir Hayford, instantly announcing his presence with a formidable defensive pair with skipper Ebenezer Abban, where he featured consistently for the Kpando-based club.

Throughout his three-year stay with the Lions, he featured 31 times in his maiden season, scored one goal, and missed three games of the entire campaign.

In his second season, he replicated his finest output and featured 31 times again but never registered a goal.

In the just-ended 2025/26 campaign, Ruben played 27 games in total.

His combination of physicality, composure, and ability to read the game defines his qualities as a modern-day center back and a perfect fit for any team.

Should this transfer materialize, it could provide a fresh opportunity for the defender who has two months left on his running contract.

However, our sources also confirmed that a club from Serbia and another from Greece have also joined the race as well as current Ghana Premier League winners Medeama SC.
