Liverpool & Portugal Star Diogo Jota, 28, Dies In Tragic Car Accident With His Brother

Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died in a car accident in northwestern Spain, alongside his brother André Silva. The 28‑year‑old had just got married and was a key figure in Liverpool’s Premier League success this season.

Diogo José Teixeira da Silva known as Diogo Jota passed away in a Lamborghini crash near Cernadilla on the A‑52 motorway in Zamora, Spain, in the early hours of July 3, 2025.

Police confirmed the vehicle veered off the road following a suspected tyre blowout and burst into flames, claiming the lives of Jota and his 25‑year‑old brother André Silva, also a professional footballer .

A native of Porto, Jota made his mark at clubs like Paços de Ferreira, Porto, and Wolverhampton before joining Liverpool in 2020 for a reported £41 million. He scored 47 goals in 123 Premier League appearances and played a key role in Liverpool’s 2024–25 Premier League triumph.

Internationally, he earned 49 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals and contributing to UEFA Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025.

Jota had married long‑term partner Rute Cardoso just ten days before the accident and leaves behind three young children.

Liverpool FC expressed devastation, requesting privacy for the family as fans already laid flowers at Anfield and call for retirement of his No. 20 shirt gained traction . The Portuguese Football Federation called it an “irreparable loss” and confirmed a minute’s silence would be observed at upcoming Women’s Euros matches.
