Nurses’ Strike Disrupts Healthcare Services Across Ghana

A nationwide strike in public hospitals has led to significant disruptions in healthcare services, leaving many patients without critical care.

The strike, primarily led by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has seen numerous nurses abandon their posts, prompting urgent responses from the Ministry of Health.

In an effort to mitigate the impact of the strike, the Ministry has activated emergency measures designed to maintain essential services.

These measures include contingency plans to ensure that maternity and emergency services remain operational while ambulance services are kept on standby.

The Ministry is working diligently to address the increased patient load in health facilities affected by the walkout.

On May 30, 2025, a high-level meeting was convened with various nursing and midwifery unions.

During this meeting, representatives presented a unified demand for the implementation of a 2024 Collective Agreement that has yet to be fulfilled.

While most unions agreed to continue offering some level of service during the strike, the GRNMA remains firm in its decision to proceed with its planned strike actions.

The Ministry of Health has expressed its commitment to addressing the concerns raised by nurses and is closely monitoring the situation as it develops.

Officials are working collaboratively with other healthcare facilities to ensure that patients receive necessary care despite the ongoing disruptions.

In light of these challenges, the Ministry has appealed to the GRNMA to reconsider its strike actions and return to negotiations in hopes of reaching a resolution that satisfies all parties involved.

As healthcare professionals continue their protest for better working conditions and fulfillment of agreements made with the government, many Ghanaians are left concerned about access to essential medical services during this critical time.
