Ghana’s minister of youth and sports, honorable Mustapha Yusif has said that the ongoing African Para Games should be a major tool to promote social inclusion and eliminate stigma against people with disabilities.
“Let’s use the African Para Games Accra 2023 As a Vehicle to Promote Social Inclusion and Help Eliminate Social Stigma Against People with Disabilities.”
He made this interesting statement at the grand opening ceremony of the first ever African Para Games in Ghana which took place at the popular Bukom Boxing Arena on September 3, 2023.
For many years now, there has been uncountable instances of discrimination and stigma of all forms against people with disabilities which does not help their development. Especially in African societies, this is common at workplaces, homes and even at churches.
The honorable minister believes this event which has brought many people with disabilities across the African continent to showcase their various talents is the best opportunity to propagate this compelling message to the world.
According to him, the event should not be seen as the usual games but also be a reminded of the United Nations convention on the rights of people with disabilities which seeks to promote, protect and ensure fundamental human rights.
The tournament which starts today and ends on September 12 also serves as the pathway for the 2024 Paralympic games qualifiers.
