Teacher Unions To Go On Strike Over Unpaid Book & Research Allowances

Three prominent unions representing tertiary education staff in Ghana have issued a warning of a potential nationwide strike if the government fails to disburse the overdue book and research allowances by June 13, 2025.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) have united in their stance against what they describe as an “undue delay” in releasing the necessary exchange rate for computing these allowances.

In a statement released today, the unions expressed growing frustration over the uncertainty surrounding the allowances, which are vital for supporting academic work and research activities.

They emphasized that many members rely on these funds to fulfill their academic responsibilities.

During a joint meeting held on June 8, union leaders resolved to remain patient regarding the late release of the exchange rate, but they firmly stated that they will not accept any payment extensions beyond September 2025.

The unions reiterated that the book and research allowance is a statutory obligation outlined in their Conditions of Service, not merely a discretionary benefit.

The unions warned that should the government fail to meet the June 13 deadline, it will be treated as an official notice of strike action, leading to industrial unrest across all affected campuses.

They urged the government to act swiftly to prevent disruptions in the academic calendar and to safeguard the welfare of lecturers and the education sector as a whole.

As tensions rise, stakeholders in the education sector are closely monitoring developments, hoping for a swift resolution to avert a strike that could impact students and faculty alike.
