Kole-Bu CEO Reveals 80% Of Patients On Dialysis Get Free Services

The Chief Executive for the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah, has revealed that for the past 6 years, 80% of people on dialysis at the facility get free services.

This comment comes after a document suggesting that the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has increased the cost of renal dialysis from GHS¢380 to GHS¢765.42 went viral on social media.

After the development, Korle-Bu came under serious attack from the public and persons who were concerned about the affordability of the treatment.

Dialysis is a life-saving treatment for people with kidney failure which removes waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys are unable to do so.

Speaking exclusively on Atinka FM, the Korle Bu CEO said for the past 6 years, First Sky Group, a philanthropic group had been catering for the cost of dialysis for 80% of people on dialysis at Korle-Bu.

He added that the increase in price was a proposal and that it wasn’t supposed to come out like it did.

Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah said the proposal will go to Parliament for Approval.

“This company has been taking care of dialysis patients quietly for the past six years without making noise. We are also looking for other Ghanaians because First Sky Group has done tremendously well by providing free dialysis by paying for 250 patients to have two sessions of dialysis every week throughout the year free of charge. So, other individuals and corporate Ghana can also join to ease the burden on the government,” he noted.
