The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, set to take effect on Saturday, May 25, 2025, following a directive from its National Executive after discussions with the Ministry of Transport.
The Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, has confirmed that all members of the Union have been instructed to implement a 15% cut in transport fares beginning Saturday, May 25, 2025.
This decision, he said, was reached after a marathon meeting between the National Executive of the GPRTU and the Minister of Transport in response to recent calls from the public and stakeholders for a fare reduction following a significant drop in fuel prices.
“We met with the Transport Ministry today after a marathon meeting. We finally decided to reduce transport fares by 15 percent, effective coming Saturday,” Alhaji Moro disclosed in an exclusive interview with Alfred Ocansey on Ghana Tonight, which is yet to air.
Explaining the rationale behind the reduction, he said: “The fuel price has dropped by, let’s say 18%. So the tradition we follow is to divide the percentage by three and apply one-third. But we decided on 15% based on fuel prices. We are also hopeful that our brothers in the spare parts business will reduce their prices as well.”
He further cautioned drivers and transport operators who may attempt to defy the directive, insisting that enforcement will be taken seriously.
“We are in Ghana, and the laws of the land must be abided by every citizen. Each time we increase lorry fares, everybody patronizes the increment. So shall it be, if there is a reduction, everybody should be prepared to comply,” he said.
He urged passengers to report any driver who refuses to implement the new fare to the nearest police station. “We are not saying they should be beaten—we are pleading—but they should be handed over to the nearest police if they fail to comply.”
The fare reduction comes as a relief to commuters already grappling with economic challenges, and it marks a significant response from the transport union to current fuel market trends.
