Coach Joe Adarkwa vows to improve Black Maidens’ goalscoring efficiency

Black Maidens head coach Joe Nana Adarkwa has promised to improve his team’s scoring chances after Ghana posted a comfortable 2-0 win against Togo in the 1st leg of the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier last Sunday in Lome, Togo.

A brace from forward Priscilla Mensah in each half was enough for the West African giants as they step foot into the second round of qualifiers.

The Maidens proved their worth and dominated the larger portion of possession, which led to the two goals.

However, Head Coach Joe Adaarkwa believes the U17 side should have fetched more goals, noting that Cynthia Obinsrewuo squandered numerous chances upfront.

Addressing the media after the game, the experienced gaffer affirmed the need to work and improve on the girls’ scoring chances ahead of the return leg in Accra.

“What happened today shows that we have to improve on our scoring, so we are going to work on our scoring so that we can take our chances. We squandered so many chances today, so we are going to work on that,” he said.

Quizzed if the Togolese team could pose a threat in the return fixture, Coach Adarkwa admitted it will be a walkover, adding that the victory on away ground was a planned one.

“We planned to come and win the match so that going back into our next game it will be a mere formality,” Coach Adarkwa added.

Ghana will face Togo in the second leg on Saturday, April 18, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Maidens will play Liberia in their second round of qualification should they do the double over Togo.

After missing out on two editions of the FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup due to a two-year ban by CAF for age fraud, Ghana will be hoping to return to the world stage since 2022.
