Earlier today, Catholic faithful and other faith actors across Ethiopia joined in a Mass for the Care of God’s Creation, held in preparation for the upcoming Africa Climate Summit.
The central celebration took place at Holy Saviour Catholic Church in Addis Ababa, with simultaneous observances across all Catholic parishes in the country.
The event was marked by reflection, thanksgiving, and a strong call to action as the Church commemorates both the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment, and the enduring gift of creation.
Presiding over the Mass was His Lordship, Most Rev. Coffi Roger Anoumou, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Lokossa in Benin, who represented the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM).

In his message, Bishop Anoumou underscored that climate justice must be rooted in morality and genuine responsibility, urging governments, civil society, and individuals to act decisively in protecting the environment.
The Second Africa Climate Summit is scheduled to take place from 8th to 10th September in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
It will bring together Heads of State, government representatives, faith leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to shape a unified African voice ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, later this year.
This faith-led initiative highlights the growing recognition of the spiritual and moral dimensions of climate action, reminding Africa and the world that the call to protect creation is both urgent and universal.
