The Denkyira Development Association (DDA) has noted with concern recent press reports that a mining firm has filed an application with the Minerals Commission for a permit to mine within the borders of the Kakum Forest Reserve. Whilst ackowledging the quick rebuttal and release by the Minerals Commission that it had refused the application, DDA is of the conviction that the Legislative Instrument ( L.I) 2462 which formed the basis of the application must be reviewed by Parliament.
As a community organization dedicated to the preservation and sustainable development of the Denkyira area which covers the Kakum National Park, DDA strongly condemns any activity that may pose a threat to our precious natural resources.
The Denkyira Development Association firmly believes that the Kakum Forest Reserve, renowned for its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, is an ecological treasure that demands our utmost protection. The Association notes that the reserve plays an indispensable role in supporting Ghana’s tourism industry, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to admire its breathtaking beauty, the canopy walkway and immerse themselves in its natural wonders.
We express our concern regarding the long-term impact of this legislation and therefore, we call upon the Parliament of Ghana to conduct a thorough review of LI2464 to ensure that it aligns with the principles of sustainable development and provides adequate protection for our cherished natural resources.
The DDA extends an open invitation to all stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, environmentalists, and concerned citizens, to collaborate and engage in productive dialogue to find equitable solutions that balance the needs of development while preserving our natural heritage. We firmly believe that by working together, we can find alternatives that promote sustainable economic growth without compromising the integrity of our environment.

The Minerals Commission has made it clear that it has turned down High Street Mining Company Limited’s request to mine in the Central Region’s Kakum National Park.
Additionally, the application was taken down from the online mining cadaster by the commission.
The Minerals Commission stressed in a statement issued by Martin Kwaku Ayisi, its Chief Executive Officer, that no mineral rights, whether for mining or prospecting, will be taken into consideration or awarded inside the boundaries of the Kakum National Park.
This is in response to public and Civil Society Organization (CSO) concerns regarding possible mining effects on Ghana’s and sub-Saharan Africa’s most popular tourist destination, Kakum National Park.
