The Ghanaian government has announced a significant increase in the producer price of cocoa, aiming to boost farmers’ incomes and maintain the country’s competitiveness in the global cocoa market.
The decision was reached after consultations between the Finance Ministry and the Producer Price Committee of Cocoa at an emergency meeting in Accra.
According to Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the new price stands at GH¢3,628 per bag of 64kg gross weight, equivalent to GH¢58,000 per tonne, effective October 3, 2025.
“A lot goes into forecasting, some market sensitive. But I want to say that the same forecast we used in arriving at the initial price, we’ve seen some changes. And as we’ve said, we’ve come back to present factors that reflect the need for us to increase the cocoa price by 400 Ghana cedis,” Dr.Ato Forson explained.
This decision represents a 12.27% increase over the initial price of GH¢3,228.75 per bag set in August, translating to an additional GH¢400 per bag. The government remains committed to supporting the Ghana Cocoa Board to build a robust and resilient cocoa industry.
“Government remains committed to supporting the Ghana Cocoa Board to build a robust and resilient cocoa industry that provides sustainable and optimal benefits to all stakeholders,” Dr. Forson emphasized.
The increased price is expected to have a positive impact on farmers’ livelihoods, providing them with better financial stability and incentives to continue producing high-quality cocoa.
The Ghana Cocoa Board will intensify support programs to boost production and farmer welfare, including the provision of free cocoa fertilizers, insecticides, and spraying machines.
The Ghana Cocoa, Coffee, and Sheanut Farmers Association has welcomed the development, urging timely delivery of inputs and transparency in pricing decisions. This move demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving the sector and the livelihoods of Ghanaian cocoa farmers.
