The Ghana Police Service has announced the conviction and sentencing of two young men involved in the theft of a pistol and other ammunitions belonging to an immigration officer in Walewale.
Mustapha Basit, 18, and Baba Rasid, 22, were arraigned before the Walewale Circuit Court on Thursday, 22nd May 2025, on charges of conspiracy to steal and stealing. Both suspects pleaded guilty to the charges.
Presiding over the case, Justice Francis Asobayeri convicted the accused on their own plea and sentenced each of them to five years imprisonment with hard labour.
According to the police report, the incident occurred on Saturday, 17th May 2025, at approximately 12 noon.
The two convicts reportedly entered the immigration officer’s room while he was away and stole a Smith and Wesson pistol loaded with ten rounds of ammunition. They also took two CZ rifle magazines, each loaded with thirty rounds of ammunition.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that processes are currently underway to transfer the suspects to prison to begin serving their sentences.
Mr. Robert Anabiik Anmain, Deputy Superintendent of Police and head of the Public Relations Unit for the Northeastern Region, emphasized the commitment of the police to uphold the law and ensure justice is served in cases involving firearms and security personnel.
This swift prosecution sends a strong message against crimes involving weapons and reinforces the security measures protecting public officers in the region.
