Senior University Staff Declares Indefinite Nationwide Strike Over Government Inactions

Three major unions representing senior staff of Ghana’s public universities have commenced an indefinite strike, citing the government’s failure to fulfill a six-month-old agreement.

Senior staff members of public universities across Ghana have begun an indefinite strike, effective Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

The action, spearheaded by the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), comes after repeated calls for the government to honor a binding agreement signed six months ago.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, SSA-UoG National Chairman George Ansong conveyed the unions’ growing frustration. “Despite several rounds of dialogue and the goodwill shown by our members, the government has consistently failed to live up to its commitments,” he stated.

He accused the government of neglecting the welfare of senior university staff and undermining the trust necessary for cooperative governance in the tertiary education sector.

The unions emphasized that the strike will remain in force until all terms of the agreement are implemented.

They called on the government to act swiftly to resolve the impasse and prevent further disruption to academic and administrative activities in public universities nationwide.
