In a remarkable display of commitment to maternal health and children development, the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has reiterated his dedication to championing proper maternal health care and children development.
“…a healthy community, a wealthy community” he believes.
At a program held at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel on March 11, 2025, the king emphasized the need for collective action to address neonatal health challenges and promote sustainable healthcare solutions.
Organized by the Embassy of Hungary in Accra, JA Health Hub, Medico, IPMC and other partners, the event brought together stakeholders to discuss the role of society in promoting proper maternal health care and children development.
As it stands now, there is only one specialized children hospital in the country — Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital built over nine decades ago. Many have raised concerns about its current state.
Senior Physician and former lecturer at the Cape Coast University, Dr. Joseph Boateng who in 1976 during his days at the medical school, went to the facility for the first time to help patients has complained about the current state of the facility.
He believes the facility needs a facelift considering the crucial role it plays and the history around it.
“We have allowed it to degenerated, right now if you go there and you see the building, you will feel sad — and it’s as a reflection of what we do not do for our institutions — and that is to maintain and respect them. We have to understand that, a place like PML should not be left to be at where it is now”
In a speech read by Nathaniel Atoh on behalf of the king, His Royal Majesty expressed his unwavering commitment to supporting the healthcare sector, particularly in the area of neonatal care.
The king’s pledge to establish a new specialized facility to support the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital is a testament to his vision for a robust and sustainable healthcare system in Ghana.
Since his visit to the hospital, where he donated medical equipments, the king has been driven to address the infrastructural and equipment deficits facing the facility.
Yesterday, at the program, the king donated another sets of ultramodern medical equipments, including incubators for primary and intensive care, to the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital and the Upper East Regional Hospital.
This generous donation is a significant step towards improving the quality of healthcare services available to children in Ghana.
The Ga Mantse’s foundation focuses on various areas, including early childhood development, girl child education, ICT and infrastructural development, health and environmental sanitation.
His commitment to these causes is evident in his pledge to ensure that the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital is not the only institution providing specialized care for children in Ghana.
“…the king has placed before him a very important task of ensuring that a few years from now, Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital will not be the only institution to offer that specialized kind of care for our children.”
As the chief custodian of the land that hosts the government of Ghana, he has already pledged to devote plots of land for this purpose.
He has also on various occasions and on various platforms invited many with the muscle and with the means to come together as a collective and ensure that this vision of having yet another institution that can lessen the burden on the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital.
This vision for a better future is a testament to the king’s leadership and dedication to the well-being of his people.
