Prominent Ghanaian hiplife/highlife artiste Kwame Nsiah-Appau known widely as Okyeame Kwame was officially unveiled yesterday as the Climate Clock ambassador for Ghana at a monumental ceremony held at the City Triangle in Accra.
The event marked the debut of the Climate Clock campaign in Africa, with Ghana leading the way as the continent’s first government to join this worldwide initiative. The next launch of the campaign is planned to take place in Nigeria.
Okyeame Kwame is not the first person to volunteer as an ambassador for a worthy cause. Solidaridad West Africa nominated him as Climate Change Ambassador in 2018 as part of the ‘Ghana Dedicated Grant Mechanism for Local Communities (DGM)’ programme. His attention to environmental problems has earned him the distinguished position of Climate Clock ambassador.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries such as Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) Chief Executive Akwasi Agyemang and Accra Mayor Mohammed Adjei-Sowah. Mrs. Jennifer Brock, the Green Accra Project coordinator, Bossman Owusu, Communications Manager-West Africa Solidaridad, and an international group from Climate Clock were also in attendance.
The newly chosen ambassador, Okyeame Kwame, has been charged with coordinating a tree-planting drive across Ghana, which is set to begin soon. Climate Clock, a global climate project, has placed its faith in the artist to inspire and motivate people to take action in response to the impending climate calamity.
Okyeame Kwame, who spoke during the event, underlined the importance of addressing climate change and the necessity for every individual to take a leadership role in these efforts. He stated his intention to spread awareness about climate change and the Climate Clock initiative across the country.
As part of his campaign, Okyeame Kwame called on the general people to contribute to the initiative by planting at least one tree in their homes and making intentional attempts to keep their surroundings clean. He believes that any amount of communal effort, no matter how tiny, can help combat climate change and save the planet for future generations.
By establishing the Climate Clock campaign, Ghana is taking the lead in Africa, and with Okyeame Kwame as the ambassador, the country is ready to inspire good change in the fight against climate change. As time passes, Ghana prepares to sow the seeds of a sustainable future, hoping that other countries will soon follow suit.
