The Ashaiman branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says the union is ready to collaborate with the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) to redevelop the area into a modern transport terminal with malls, shops, lorry parks, and others.
According to them, they are the rightful owners of the property and have maintained ownership for 22 years until a sudden unlawful encroachment by a group named the Peaceful Settlers Association.
The issue then proceeded to the court, where the court ruled judgment in favor of GPRTU after 20 years, after which the Peaceful Settlers Association accepted the ruling, asking the union to rehabilitate the area and rent it out to them.
Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, Chairman of the Ashaiman Highway and Trotro Branch of the GPRTU, Isaac Kisseih Agamah, reiterated that they are the rightful owners of the property, adding that on authority the union will not allow the Peaceful Settlers Association to deprive them of their property.
“The GPRTU owed the property for over 22 years before the Peaceful Settlers Association encroached on it to claim ownership. We are the rightful owners of this property, and we are saying with authority that we will never allow the Peaceful Settlers Association to deprive us of our property,” he said.
According to him, the union has not engaged any private investor as described by the Peaceful Settlers, emphasizing the union’s commitment to liaise with the ASHMA with the motive of improving transport operations while expanding business opportunities with the building of shops and malls.
He mentioned that the Municipal Chief Executive of Ashaiman has no personal interest or share in the project, strongly debunking the allegations.
Mr. Kisseih Agamah stressed that the issue is out of politics and that no one should affiliate it to any political party or leadership.
“The case is out of politics; hence, no one should involve politics into it. We want everyone to understand that GPRTU is not a government institution, but we are well organized by the government”, he concluded.
