Prince Anane urges GFA to implement strict traveling policies to protect local footballers

Berekum Chelsea skipper Prince Anane is making a passionate appeal to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to ensure strict measures are implemented to secure the safety of clubs who travel long distances after match days.

According to him, away clubs that travel back to their destinations, which exceeds three hours, should be made to spend the night over and travel the next day.

Anane’s appeal comes in the aftermath of Sunday’s unfortunate robbery attack on the entire team of Berekum Chelsea Football Club on their return from Samreboi following their match against Samartex.

In a detailed narration to Joy News, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Berekum Chelsea, Albert Kwabena Diawuo, said the robbers opened fire on them in Samreboi, between the Bibiani and Nkoso roads, which led to the death of one player, Dominic Frimpong, with others sustaining injuries.

The horrific incident has caused many to question the number of security arrangements put in place for players and other stakeholders.

Speaking on Akoma FM in Kumasi, Anane urged the football governing body to secure the safety of clubs by enforcing restrictions on traveling long distances after games.

“My appeal to the GFA is that, going forward, there should be strict measures to prevent clubs from traveling long distances after matches. If the away team’s destination is more than three hours away, the team should stay overnight and travel the next day,” he said.

Over the past four years, three GPL clubs have been targeted in robbery attacks while returning home after away league games.

In 2022, AshGold FC was ambushed while traveling back to Obuasi from Accra after a match against Hearts of Oak. Three shots were fired into the team bus, but the team escaped unharmed.

Legon Cities was robbed, with cash, phones, and other valuables stolen by armed robbers while coming back from a league game at Samreboi in 2023, where player Osman Amadu was badly beaten after resisting and refusing to comply.

The latest is Berekum Chelsea’s Dominic Frimpong, who was shot dead after the team bus chose to flee the scene following a robbery attack.

Dominic Frimpong, 20, joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Football Club ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.
