The Oti Regional Police Command has announced the successful interception of illegal firearms, ammunition, and a large consignment of Indian hemp following two intelligence-led operations conducted in February 2026. The details were made public at a press conference held on 12th February 2026 by the Oti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alex Acquah.
In the first operation, police officers intercepted a KIA Rhino truck with registration number GS-4677-17 travelling from Accra toward Xpandai in the Northern Region on 8th February 2026.
A search of the vehicle uncovered one locally manufactured single-barrel shotgun and twenty-one (21) boxes of ammunition, totaling 525 rounds of LAAA and BB cartridges. The driver, Abubakari Salam (35), and his mate, Kabuja Tademe (19), were arrested in connection with the case.
Kabuja Tademe was charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and conspiracy to commit crime. He appeared before the Jasikan Circuit Court on 12th February 2026 and pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition without lawful authority. The court granted him bail in the sum of GH¢30,000 with one surety and adjourned the case to 5th March 2026 for further hearing.
In a separate operation on 10th February 2026, police officers intercepted a DAF long trailer with registration number GW 1943-09 and discovered 4,000 parcels of compressed Indian hemp, wrapped in yellow masking tape.
The suspect, Amidu Jubril (40), a Nigerian national, was arrested at the scene. He pleaded not guilty to possession of narcotics without lawful authority and has been remanded into police custody.
DCOP Alex Acquah assured residents of the Oti Region that the Police Command remains committed to sustained operations aimed at eliminating illegal weapons, narcotics, and related criminal activities.
He commended officers involved in the operations and appealed to the public to continue supporting the Police with timely and credible information to help maintain peace and security across communities.
