I will advise every upcoming artiste to learn how to perform with a live band – Phatelinuks

Ghanaian highlife artiste Phatelinuks, popularly known as Mr. PL, has advised emerging musicians to deliberately learn how to perform with a live band, describing it as a critical skill every serious artiste must develop.

Speaking in an interview on Ahomka FM with DJ Qwequ, Phatelinuks made the call while responding to a question on what he believes should be done to properly reposition Ghanaian highlife music and restore its dominance on the music scene.

According to the singer, many upcoming artistes today rely heavily on instrumentals and backing tracks, which limits their growth and performance versatility. He stressed that performing with a live band exposes artistes to real musical discipline and helps them better understand rhythm, tempo, timing, and vocal control.

“I will advise every upcoming artiste to learn how to perform with a live band so they can get used to what is needed for live events,” Phatelinuks stated.

He explained that live band performances demand a higher level of preparation and professionalism, something artistes must get accustomed to early in their careers. He noted that several major concerts, festivals, and corporate shows often require artistes to perform with live bands, and those who lack the experience struggle on such stages.

Phatelinuks further added that mastering live band performances gives artistes the flexibility to comfortably explore and perform across different music genres, not just highlife.

“When artistes get used to performing with a live band, it becomes easier for them to perform other genres of music. It also prepares them for the future because some shows will demand live band performances,” he added.

Touching on the future of Ghanaian highlife music, Phatelinuks emphasized that live instrumentation is one of the core elements that gave the genre its identity and global appeal. He believes that returning to that foundation will help preserve the authenticity of highlife while making it more appealing to younger audiences.

The musician encouraged record labels, event organizers, and radio stations to also support live band performances by creating more platforms that promote live music sessions.
