Otumfuo Concludes Mediation As Bawku Leaders Meet Face-to-Face at Manhyia Palace

His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, on Monday concluded his sustained mediation efforts in the Bawku chieftaincy crisis by facilitating a direct meeting between the disputing parties at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi.

The Naayiri’s side was represented by a 30-member delegation led by Chief Tarana John Wuni Grumah, Paramount Chief of Tarana Traditional Area and spokesperson for the Naayiri, His Majesty Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdullai Sheriga. The delegation also included representatives of the Mamprugu and Mampurusi traditional authorities.

On the opposing side, Naba Tambis Baalug, Paramount Chief of Pusiga, led the delegation representing Bawku Naaba Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II and the Kusasi people. Hon. Cletus Avoka served as spokesperson, with Dr. Issah representing both the Naayiri and the Mamprusi. Both groups comprised chiefs, lawyers, academics, opinion leaders and youth representatives.

After months of mediating separate discussions, the Asantehene brought both parties together to speak directly in what he described as a final push to secure lasting peace in the Bawku traditional area. The meeting was held in a cordial environment, with both sides stressing that they are one people and should not be engaged in conflict.

His Majesty commended the two factions for their maturity and urged them to remember that regardless of the mediation’s outcome, they must coexist peacefully as brothers and sisters. He encouraged the traditional leaders to begin preparing their supporters’ minds to permanently avoid violence and disorder.

The Asantehene further announced that he would submit his report, along with key proposals, to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days. He expressed hope that the President would act swiftly and convene a formal meeting of all stakeholders to announce the final outcome of the mediation efforts.

The press release was signed by Kofi Badu, Chief of Staff at the Manhyia Palace.
