Crime and Justice Lagos, the Nigerian adaption of the Showmax Original, has won the awards for Best TV Series and Best Picture Editor at the ninth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, which took place Saturday night at Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos, Nigeria.
The biggest and most glamorous night to celebrate African film and TV talent also saw Deola Art Alade win the award for Best Costume Designer for The Real Housewives of Lagos reunion episodes.
Showmax is also the streaming home of the Best Telenovela winner (Zambezi Magic’s Mpali), the Best Drama Series winner (Africa Magic’s Ricordi); and Best Comedy Series winner (Maisha Magic East’s Njoro Wa Uba).
Receiving the award for Best TV Series for Crime and Justice Lagos, Folu Storms, the show’s lead cast member, said: “Thank you guys so much. This is incredible! A big shout-out to Yinka Edward. Without him, we certainly wouldn’t be here receiving this. Big shout out to our directors and the whole team.”
Holmes Awa and Daniel Tom scooped the second award for Best Picture Editor for their work on Crime and Justice Lagos. Their triumph amidst a pool of talented nominees showcases their exceptional editing skills and their ability to bring stories to life.
On the other hand, Deola Art-Alade in a speech given on her behalf by her husband and co-executive producer, Dare Art Alade, thanked the stunning, fashionable housewives for “eating all their looks and leaving no crumbs.” She also thanked everyone who worked tirelessly to make the moment a reality.
Speaking on Showmax’s wins at the awards, Opelouwa Filani, general manager: Showmax Nigeria, congratulated the winners and said: “The AMVCAs is a prestigious platform for celebrating the African film and TV industry, and it’s an incredible honour for a creative to get recognized on a platform as big as this. These wins validate the amazing work we at Showmax and our amazing partners are doing. And interestingly, we are just getting started.”
Showmax Originals from Nigeria including Diiche, Flawsome, and Wura were nominated for 22 awards in nine categories, Showmax’s best performance at the awards so far.
Showmax is also home to a huge collection of TV shows and films from MultiChoice – the largest producer of original content on the African continent.
Since the launch of its first Nigerian Original, I am Laycon in February 2021, Showmax has continued to expand its Nigerian content slate with an offering of reality TV, comedy-drama, limited drama series, telenovelas and animated series.
The streaming service not only tells authentic Nigerian stories but also spotlights new and upcoming talents, including Uzoamaka Onuoha, Iremide Adeoye, Tolu George, and many others in its originals.
