“Misleading & Inaccurate,” —Okudzeto Ablakwa Responds To Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s Deportation To Ghana

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has firmly rejected reports suggesting that the United States plans to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Ghana.

In a Facebook post on Friday, the Minister described the reports as “misleading and inaccurate,” emphasizing that Ghana will not accept Abrego Garcia or any deportee who is not a Ghanaian national.

“Ghana is not accepting Abrego Garcia. He cannot be deported to Ghana,” Hon. Ablakwa stated unequivocally. “This has been directly and unambiguously conveyed to U.S. authorities,” he added.

Hon. Ablakwa further clarified that Ghana’s prior understanding with the United States to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans on humanitarian grounds does not extend to the current case.

“In my interactions with U.S. officials, I made clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles, would not be expanded,” he said.

The Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to international cooperation but stressed that such collaboration must be guided by respect for sovereignty and mutual understanding. “Ghana strongly objects to these misleading media reports,” the statement concluded.

The clarification follows reports by U.S. media, including ABC News, that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was preparing to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Ghana.

Ghanaian authorities, however, insist that the country has no legal or diplomatic basis to receive him.
