Former AS Roma striker who currently plays for Juventus Next Gen, Felix Afena-Gyan has been named in the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2025 Unity Cup in London, marking his return to the national team after being left out of the 2022 World Cup squad.
Under the guidance of head coach Otto Addo, Afena-Gyan has been included in the 23-man squad as one of the top strikers for the competition.
This selection is seen as an opportunity for the young player to showcase his skills and prove himself again on the international stage.
The Black Stars are set to participate in the 2025 Unity Cup in London, and Afena-Gyan’s inclusion in the squad is expected to add depth and competition to the team’s attacking lineup.
He debuted with Ghana in a 0–0 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification tie with Nigeria on 25 March 2022.
On 1 June 2022, Afena-Gyan scored his first international goal, as he contributed to the Black Stars’ 3–0 win against Madagascar in the first match of the qualifiers to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations: in the same occasion, he also provided the assist for Mohammed Kudus’ opening goal.
The tournament promises to be an exciting event, with the Black Stars looking to make a strong impression.
Felix Afena-Gyan’s return to the Black Stars squad is a significant development for the young player and the national team.
With the 2025 Unity Cup on the horizon, Afena-Gyan will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact and cement his place in the team.
The tournament, set to be held in London, will see Ghana compete alongside Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica.
Home-based stars, Benjamin Asare (Accra Hearts of Oak), Razak Simpson (Nations FC), Mamudu Kamaradini (Medeama SC), and Kwame Opoku (Asante Kotoko) are all in the squad. Joining them is Joseph Tetteh Anang, a former West Ham United goalkeeper now at St. Patrick’s Athletic in Ireland.
Youngsters Abdul Aziz Issah and Aaron Essel, who showed an impressive performance at the just end U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, have also been promoted to the senior setup.
Promising FC Nordsjaelland defender Caleb Yirenkyi and Belgium-based Mohammed Gadafi Fuseini are also in the squad
The squad also sees the return of key players like Abdul Samed Salis, back from injury and now with Sunderland and Majeed Ashimeru from Anderlecht. Jordan Ayew (Leicester City) and Thomas-Asante (Coventry City) provide experience in attack.
The team will convene in London ahead of their opening semi-final clash against arch-rivals Nigeria on Wednesday, May 28, at the GTech Community Stadium. A win will secure a place in the final, scheduled for Saturday, May 31.
The Unity Cup promises high-stakes action and a valuable opportunity for Ghana’s next generation of stars to stake their claim on the international stage.
