Chairman Wontumi Under Investigation For Fraud & Money Laundering — Deputy AG Confirms

Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai has officially confirmed that Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is under active criminal investigation for alleged fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the State.

In a significant development, Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai has announced that Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and popular political figure known as Chairman Wontumi, is being investigated for a string of serious financial crimes.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Justice Srem-Sai disclosed that the ongoing probe includes allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the State.

He emphasized that these investigations are being handled with the utmost urgency and are proceeding concurrently with asset recovery measures to prevent the suspected proceeds of crime from being hidden or squandered.

“We are committed to ensuring that any assets found to be connected to unlawful activity are secured and recovered in line with the law,” the Deputy AG stated.

In addition to the domestic investigation, the Deputy Attorney-General revealed that Chairman Wontumi is also a person of interest in a broader international criminal probe.

This second strand of the investigation reportedly centres on Wontumi’s suspected involvement in a transnational organised crime network.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is said to be collaborating with international law enforcement agencies to unravel the full extent of the operation and Wontumi’s alleged role in it.

The revelation is likely to have wide-ranging political and legal implications, as Chairman Wontumi remains a high-profile figure within the ruling party.

Calls for transparency and due process have already begun to emerge from both sides of the political aisle, as the investigation unfolds.

Justice Srem-Sai assured the public that the Attorney-General’s office will uphold the principles of justice and accountability, stressing that “no one is above the law.”
