CCMA inaugurates 50 sweepers to enhance sanitation in the metropolis

The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. George Justice Arthur, has inaugurated 50 sweepers as part of a renewed effort to improve sanitation and maintain cleanliness across the metropolis.

The newly recruited sanitation workforce comprises 30 women who will be responsible for sweeping streets and public spaces, while 20 men will focus on clearing weeds and maintaining overgrown areas within the municipality.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Hon. George Justice Arthur explained that the initiative forms part of his vision to make Cape Coast the cleanest city in Ghana. According to him, the decision followed discussions with the management of the Assembly, which led to the recruitment of labourers, sanitary inspectors, and sweepers to strengthen sanitation efforts in the metropolis.

He stated that the sweepers would be assigned to various locations across Cape Coast, including principal streets, refuse container sites, beaches, and drainage systems. Their responsibilities will include ensuring that public spaces remain clean, container sites are properly maintained, beaches are free from waste, and gutters are cleared of rubbish to allow the free flow of water.

The MCE further noted that the sanitation team would also help educate residents and discourage indiscriminate littering, which remains one of the major challenges facing the city.

Hon. Arthur disclosed that the workers’ salaries would be paid from a portion of the District Assemblies Common Fund allocated for waste management. He stressed that the Assembly is committed to sustaining the initiative and would not wait until major events or festivals before undertaking citywide cleaning exercises.

“I will not wait for occasions or festivals before directing that the city be cleaned. Maintaining cleanliness must be a continuous exercise if we are to achieve our goal of making Cape Coast the cleanest city in Ghana,” he said.

The MCE urged the newly recruited sweepers to discharge their duties diligently and professionally, assuring them that the Assembly would provide all the necessary tools and materials required for their work.

He also cautioned that absenteeism and negligence would not be tolerated, emphasizing that all workers are expected to.
