Election 2028: NPP To Elect Flagbearer On January 31, 2026

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled its presidential primaries for Saturday, January 31, 2026, setting the stage for the selection of its flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The decision was reached during a pivotal meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Addressing the media after the meeting, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua confirmed the date, emphasizing that the NEC’s resolution does not necessitate any amendment to the party’s constitution.

“The Committee also spoke about the time for our presidential primaries. And again, the Committee agrees that that decision does not warrant amendment of our Constitution. And the National Council today also made the decision that the date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries,” he said.

With the party preparing for a highly competitive internal race, interest is mounting among key figures and emerging voices eager to lead the NPP into the 2028 polls.

Party executives have indicated that comprehensive nomination guidelines, campaign timelines, and a code of conduct for aspirants will be published in the coming weeks. The NEC has pledged to ensure a fair, transparent, and democratic process reflective of the party’s core values.

The 2026 primaries are poised to be a significant moment in the NPP’s journey as it seeks to maintain political dominance and build on its legacy heading into the next election cycle.
