As part of the agenda to promote great things in Africa and bridge the gap between people on the African continent and Africans in the diaspora, Ghanaian YouTuber, Berthold Kobby Winkler Ackon popularly known as Wode Maya has over the years been telling compelling stories about the continent.
As the first African YouTuber to accumulate a million and over subscribers on the audiovisual sharing platform, he has many contents that tell captivating stories about the African continent and other parts of the world. He has travelled to many countries on the continent to interact with indigence, delve deeper into their diverse cultures, explore more opportunities in these countries.
He has met and had one on one conversations with many great personalities on the continent — past and present presidents, government officials, entrepreneurs and other influential personalities.
The Niche this young man has created for himself is not only helping Ghana but the entire continent. He has received commendations from many high-profile personalities across the globe which he has said is one of the key things that motivates him to go the extra mile to tell more captivating stories about Africa.
This time around he has travelled to Suriname — a small country on the northeastern coast of South America. It is one of the most beautiful and ethnically diverse countries in the region. Its economy is dependent on its extensive supply of natural resources, most notably bauxite, of which it is one of the top producers in the world. The official language is Dutch, and the lingua franca is Sranan Tongo which is an Afro Surinamese language understood by all Surinamese regardless of the ethnic group.
It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west, and Brazil to the south.It has a population of approximately 612,985, dominated by descendants from the slaves and laborers brought in from Africa and Asia by the Dutch Empire. Most of the people live by the country’s (north) coast, in and around its capital and largest city, Paramaribo. It is also one of the least densely populated countries on Earth. Situated slightly north of the equator, Suriname is a tropical country covered in rainforests.
Research has it that, there is a diplomatic relationship between Suriname and Ghana which was established in November 24, 1975. It is documented that the Akans from the central Ghana were, officially, the predominant ethnic group of slaves in Suriname.

Maya and some natives spent time on the Suriname river — the 480 kilometer river which flows through the country. It has it source in the Guiana Highlands on the boarder between the Wilhelmina Mountains and the Eilerts de Hagan Mountains. The source of the Upper Suriname River is at the confluence of the Gran Rio and Pikin Rio near the village of Goddo.
