The Women’s Caucus in Parliament together with the Ladies in the Parliamentary Service on Wednesday marked this year’s International Women’s Day with a grand celebration aimed at promoting women’s empowerment, leadership, and professional growth.
The colorful event, chaired by Patricia Appiagyei, brought together distinguished women from Parliament, staff of the Parliamentary Service, and representatives from several notable institutions. The gathering served as a platform to celebrate the achievements of women while also encouraging them to strive for greater participation and influence in leadership and national development.
Delivering the keynote address, Vice Chairperson of the Public Services Commission of Ghana, Dr. Irene Stella Agyenim-Boateng, encouraged women to be deliberate about their professional and personal development. She urged women across all sectors to remain focused, pursue opportunities for advancement, and invest in building the skills necessary to excel in their careers.
“Be intentional about your career growth, nobody will do it for you,” she advised. “You are responsible for your own relevance, so create it.” she said.

According to her, intentionality in career growth is critical for women who aspire to take up leadership roles and contribute meaningfully to national progress. She further encouraged women to support one another, build strong networks, and continuously seek knowledge and mentorship.
Speaking on behalf of male Members of Parliament, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, reaffirmed the commitment of male legislators to support women in their quest for equality and representation. He encouraged women to continue pushing boundaries and challenging societal norms that limit their progress.
“There’s a lot more to be done, power is not easily given to people, you must grab it. You will always be in competition with others, let those who have succeeded in it be your inspiration” he said.

He emphasized that empowering women benefits not only individuals but also families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
As part of activities marking this year’s celebration, the Women’s Caucus and the Ladies in the Parliamentary Service extended the commemoration beyond Parliament by visiting selected schools. The initiative aimed at inspiring young girls and empowering them with valuable insights and guidance to help shape their future.
During the outreach, students were engaged in motivational discussions and encouraged to remain focused on their education and ambitions.
Deputy Clerk to Parliament, Dr. Gloria Sarku Kumawu, speaking to the media, explained that the outreach program was designed to nurture the next generation of female leaders. She noted that exposing young girls to inspiring role models and leadership experiences is crucial in building their confidence and aspirations.

According to her, the initiative reflects Parliament’s commitment to empowering the younger generation and creating pathways for future women leaders in Ghana.

Other notable speakers at the event included the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie, and Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who both underscored the importance of sustained advocacy, education, and mentorship in advancing the cause of women.
The celebration highlighted the progress made in promoting gender equality while also serving as a reminder of the work that still lies ahead in ensuring equal opportunities for women across all sectors of society.
