NSA lifts suspension on boxing activities

The National Sports Authority (NSA), has announced that the suspension of all boxing activities in the country has been lifted, effective Thursday, November 6.

This came to light following months of successful consultation with Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) overseeing the sports’ normalization process.

The Authority was forced to temporarily suspend all boxing activities following the death of boxer, Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey, widely known by his ring name ‘Buhubali’.

The unfortunate incident happened on September 23, 11 days after he lost to Jacob Dickson in a Middleweight contest at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The decision was to ensure the safety, professionalism, and global competitiveness of Ghanaian boxing, and focus heavily on medical integrity and organizational transparency.

In a statement issued by the NSA, it stated that the IMC has made “significant progress” in resolving the issues that led to the sport’s suspension, particularly through strengthened medical and safety protocols and improvements in governance and administrative systems.

“This marks a major step toward restoring Ghana’s illustrious and proud boxing heritage,” the NSA stated, commending the IMC, athletes, and stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the period of reform.

It also announced that, in the coming weeks, there will be education and regular engagements to roll out exciting partnerships aimed at uplifting the general well-being of Ghanaian boxers and the sports brand.

Among the new frameworks and initiatives to be rolled out are:

Published Medical and Safety Manuals, Codes, and Regulations;

A Functional Interim Medical Commission A Centralized Medical Database

An Approved Insurance Framework

A Sustainable Medical Support System

Certified Ringside and Medical Staff

The NSA looks forward to a vibrant return of professional boxing and encourage local and foreign promoters to bring international bouts and collaborations to Ghana under these enhanced standards.
