Mali National Team Coach,Tom Saintfiet Still Interested In Coaching Ghana Black Stars

Mali coach Tom Saintfiet has expressed interest in potentially coaching Ghana’s Black Stars in the future, though he has ruled out any immediate move.

In an interview with Adom TV, the Belgian tactician emphasized that his current commitment lies entirely with Mali through the duration of his contract, which runs until 2026.

“Right now, my focus is fully on Mali, but once my contract ends, I’d be very open to working with Otto Addo and others in the future,” Saintfiet stated.

The 52-year-old coach also addressed speculation about a potential immediate switch, noting that Ghana already has stability in their coaching position with Otto Addo contracted until 2027.

“Otto Addo is Ghana’s coach until 2027 and will likely qualify the team for the World Cup,” Saintfiet explained. “My turn, if it comes, won’t be immediate—it could be a year or two after my contract ends in 2026.”

Saintfiet’s comments suggest a respectful approach to potential future opportunities while maintaining professional loyalty to his current role with Mali’s national team.

Saintfiet took over the Mali national team earlier in 2024, replacing Éric Chelle, who was relieved of his duties following a series of underwhelming performances, including a disappointing run in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Malian Football Federation saw Saintfiet as the right man to bring renewed discipline and tactical awareness to the squad.

His biggest test so far came in September during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, when Mali faced Ghana in Accra. Despite taking the lead, Mali fell 1-0 to the Black Stars, with Djiku scoring a dramatic winner.

The result was a blow to Mali’s World Cup hopes but also highlighted the team’s ongoing development under Saintfiet.

Interestingly, that match also pitted him directly against Otto Addo—potentially a future colleague, if Saintfiet’s career trajectory aligns with his openness to new opportunities after his Mali tenure concludes.
