Youth Advised Against Smoking As We Enter New Year.

The CEO of Kess Pharmaceuticals Limited, Olive Health Diagnostics and Imaging, Mrs. Irene Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu, has urged Ghanaian youth to desist from smoking.

Speaking ahead of the 2025 crossover, Mrs. Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu, who is the Sompahemaa of Asanteman, advised the youth to avoid smoking weed cigarette, shisha and other tobacco-related products, citing alarming health risks.

Mrs. Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu highlighted the consequences of smoking, often glamorized in social settings like clubs.

“Studies shows that smoking shisha for one sitting is equivalent to smoking 120 to 200 cigarettes,” – she noted.

This trend, she added, does not only affect the smokers but also endangers those around them through second-hand smoke, which carries the same risks.

Health professionals have long warned that prolonged exposure to shisha smoke increases the likelihood of developing respiratory issues, lung cancer, heart disease, and other severe conditions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that shisha smoking delivers harmful toxins and carcinogens that are as dangerous as, if not more than, traditional cigarettes.

Mrs. Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu encouraged Ghanaians to reflect on the year with gratitude and plan ahead with a sense of purpose and responsibility.

“We should show gratitude to God for bringing us this far. Spend time in church or a place where you can reflect and set goals for the coming year,”- she advised.

She also emphasized the need for accountability in personal decisions, especially as celebrations peak during the festive period.

”Let’s make responsible choices. Avoid behaviors that harm your health or others. Smoking shisha might seem trendy, but its long-term effects can be devastating,”- she warned.

The message from Sompahemaa comes at a crucial time when shisha smoking has gained popularity among Ghanaian youth despite its harmful health implications.

She called on families, schools and community leaders to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and foster healthier habits among young people.

As the country ushers in a new year, Mrs. Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu’s heartfelt plea serves as a reminder that good health and responsible living are essential to achieving personal and national goals.

Her call to action challenges Ghanaians to protect their well-being and celebrate the New Year in ways that honor both themselves and their loved ones.
