Police Dismantles Illegal Mining In Wassa Gyapa: Over 120 Changfang Machines Disabled, 13 Persons Arrested

In a robust operation aimed at curbing illegal mining activities, the Western Central Regional Police Command successfully disabled more than 120 changfang machines and arrested 13 suspects in Wassa Gyapa on May 19, 2025.

This operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat the illegal “galamsey” mining crisis that has plagued the region.

The arrested individuals, identified as Nana Ampadu, Stephen Tetteh, Yaw Dalame, Samuel Amoah, Kwame Oppong, Francis Oduom, Owusu Asare, Atta Kwame, Apiyanga Emmanuel, Kojo Montanakito, Maxwell Owusu, Obofo Vincent, and Soogal Fataw, are expected to face charges related to illegal mining activities.

In addition to the changfang machines, police recovered six motorbikes from the scene, further indicating the scale of operations conducted by these illegal miners.

The disabled machinery and arrests highlight the police’s commitment to restoring law and order in the area.

The suspects are set to be arraigned before the Tarkwa Circuit Court today, where legal proceedings will determine their fate.

Local authorities are hopeful that this action will deter future illegal mining activities and protect the environment from further degradation.
