Manchester City winger and Belgian international Jeremy Baffour Doku has reaffirmed his deep connection to Ghana, pledging to inspire young talent and invest in key sectors during his off-season visit to the country of his heritage.

The 23-year-old footballer, born to Ghanaian parents, made the commitment during a courtesy call on Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, on July 17, 2025, in Accra.

“I cannot shine unless people put me on,” Doku said. “I’m proud of my Ghanaian roots, I speak Twi, and I want to come back more often to give back to the land of my parents”.

Accompanied by his father, Mr. Davies Doku, and other family members, Doku’s visit was more than ceremonial, it was a heartfelt gesture of gratitude and a blueprint for future engagement.

The football star quietly visited Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Achimota Hospital, signaling his interest in supporting healthcare initiatives and grassroots football development.

According to delegation lead Lady Dentaa, Doku is determined to expand his philanthropic footprint across Ghana, with plans to, Sponsor youth football clinics, Support hospital infrastructure and medical outreach, Collaborate with the Ministry on talent identification programs.

“He is ready to invest more in Ghana’s youth and health systems,” Dentaa revealed.

Minister Kofi Adams lauded Doku as a “global ambassador of Ghanaian excellence,” noting that his success story should serve as a wake-up call for Ghana’s sports development institutions.

“Though you play for Belgium, every time you step on the pitch, Ghana is mentioned,” the Minister said. “Your discipline and humility on and off the field make you a powerful role model for our youth”.

The Minister also acknowledged that Ghana must improve its talent tracking systems, lamenting missed opportunities to nurture gifted athletes like Doku earlier in their development.

Doku’s visit included a stop at his family home in Madina, where he organized the Jeremy Doku Cup, a local football tournament aimed at inspiring young players.

He also paid a courtesy visit to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, presenting a Manchester City jersey as a symbol of respect and cultural pride.

His trip culminated in a reflective visit to Elmina Castle, where he engaged with Ghana’s historical legacy and expressed a desire to understand his ancestral past beyond sport.

Doku’s actions exemplify the power of diaspora-led development. His commitment to Ghana’s youth, healthcare, and sports infrastructure sends a powerful message: success abroad should translate into impact at home.
