Kyei Mensah-Bonsu Honored with Order Of Volta – Companion, Ghana’s Highest National Award

Ghana’s longest-serving lawmaker, a distinguished statesman, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has been conferred with the prestigious Order of the Volta – Companion (CV), the highest national honor in the Republic of Ghana.


The ceremony, held on December 30, 2024 at the Accra International Conference Centre, Accra, celebrated his unparalleled contributions to parliamentary democracy, public service and national development.

The award citation highlighted his unwavering dedication to the Suame Constituency, where he has served as Member of Parliament since 1997.

It praised his transformative infrastructure initiatives and his ability to inspire confidence in Ghana’s democratic process.


The citation reads — “Beyond legislative duties, you have been an unwavering advocate for the development of your constituency. Through your initiatives, you have facilitated improvements in infrastructure.

Your legacy as a statesman, legislator, and public servant is one of dedication, excellence, and impact. Your work continues to inspire confidence in the democratic process and serves as a guiding light for the next generation of leaders in Ghana.”

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Born on February 3, 1957 holds a degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is an urban planner by profession.


He stepped into the political arena in 1997 as MP for Suame and went on to serve as the Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament. He is also the incumbent Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.

His tenure in the 8th Parliament, often described as the most contentious due to the near-equal numbers on both sides of the House, showcased his exceptional leadership and negotiation skills.

As Chairperson of key committees, including the Business Committee and the Special Budget Committee, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu steered legislative work with finesse, earning him widespread respect across political divides.

Joining him on the prestigious Order of the Volta honors list were other remarkable Ghanaians:

  • Ambassador Mercy Yvonne Debrah-Karikari, lauded for her diplomacy and commitment to international relations.

  • Professor Ato Essuman, recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to education.

  • Nana Susubribi Krobea Asante, celebrated for his significant role in traditional governance and cultural preservation.
    These honorees epitomize excellence in their respective fields, embodying the values of service and nation-building.

  • Receiving the accolade, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu expressed gratitude to the people of Suame and the nation at large for their unwavering support throughout his political journey.
    The ceremony was a testament to the importance of selfless service and the enduring impact of visionary leadership.
    Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu holds the esteemed title of Sompahene in the Ashanti Kingdom, a mark of great respect and honor.

As Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu continues to inspire a new generation, his legacy as a parliamentarian and statesman is firmly etched in Ghana’s history.
