Government Reverts Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport

The Government of Ghana has officially announced the renaming of Kotoka International Airport back to its original designation, Accra International Airport. The decision, communicated by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Transport, marks a significant administrative update aimed at restoring the facility’s former and internationally recognized name.

According to the Ministry, the airport was originally known as Accra International Airport prior to its redesignation. Government has deemed it appropriate to revert to this historic name as part of efforts to reinforce consistency and global recognition.

Authorities have assured the general public, aviation stakeholders, and international partners that the name change will not affect airport operations, safety protocols, or international travel arrangements.

Importantly, within the records of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the airport’s internationally recognized code has consistently remained “ACC.” As such, airlines, travel agencies, and passengers will experience no disruptions in bookings, ticketing, or flight operations.

Authorities have emphasized that the transition will be carefully managed to ensure clarity, accuracy, and continuity across all sectors connected to the aviation industry.

The Ministry of Transport has called on the general public, industry stakeholders, and international partners to support and cooperate with the relevant authorities to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.

The Ministry also expressed appreciation for the continued collaboration and understanding of all stakeholders as the implementation phase proceeds.

The renaming represents an administrative restoration rather than a structural or operational change, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to maintaining stability, efficiency, and global standards within its aviation sector.
