Foreign Affairs Minister Defuses Igbo Kingdom Controversy, Urges Calm and Solidarity

In a swift diplomatic intervention, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has addressed the growing controversy surrounding a resurfaced video featuring Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, a Nigerian national who claimed intentions to establish an Igbo Kingdom in Ghana.

The video, which recently went viral, was traced back to a 2013 interview in which Mr. Ihenetu spoke of acquiring land to create an autonomous Igbo enclave.

The footage sparked public outrage and raised concerns over Ghana’s sovereignty and traditional governance structures.

Following the uproar, Hon. Ablakwa invited Mr. Ihenetu for a meeting on July 16, 2025, where the latter clarified that the interview was outdated and no longer reflected his views.

He expressed deep regret over the statements and confirmed that he had not purchased any land for such a purpose.

“Chukwudi conveyed profuse apologies to the President, Government, Chiefs, and People of Ghana for the unfortunate agitations his rather ill-advised interview has created,” Ablakwa stated in a Facebook post following the meeting.

Minister Ablakwa reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to its celebrated foreign policy, which welcomes Africans and people of African descent to its peaceful shores.

He emphasized that while Ghana remains open and hospitable, it expects all guests to respect its laws, customs, and traditions.

“We are determined to keep championing that Pan-African identity, for which we have attained global renown,” Ablakwa wrote, adding that conduct deemed unlawful, divisive, or incendiary will not be tolerated.

The Minister also called for calm and restraint, reminding citizens of the inseparable bond of friendship and brotherhood between Ghana and Nigeria.

He cautioned against inflammatory commentary that could lead to xenophobic consequences, urging all parties to uphold the spirit of African solidarity.

As Ghana continues to lead on the continent in peacebuilding and Pan-African cooperation, this episode serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between openness and sovereignty.
