Bernard Ahiafor Urges Minority To Seek Legal Redress Over Chairman Wontumi’s Detention

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has advised the Minority in Parliament to pursue legal action regarding the ongoing detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Chairman Wontumi remains in custody at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following allegations of fraud, money laundering, and involvement in organized crime.

The Attorney General’s Department confirmed that Chairman Wontumi’s arrest stems from serious accusations that have raised concerns across political circles.

In response to his continued detention, members of the Minority staged a walkout during a parliamentary session and later held a sit-down demonstration at EOCO’s headquarters on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed strong criticism of EOCO’s handling of the case, accusing the investigative body of unfair treatment and political bias.

“We will not rest until justice is served,” Afenyo-Markin stated. He called for solidarity among the Majority in Parliament to stand against what he described as an infringement on political rights.

The situation has sparked widespread debate over the role of law enforcement in political matters and its potential implications for democracy in Ghana.

As tensions escalate, all eyes are on Parliament to see how this issue will unfold in the coming days.

Political analysts suggest that this incident could have far-reaching consequences for the NPP party.

The outcome may not only affect Chairman Wontumi but also reshape the dynamics within Parliament as both sides prepare for potential legal battles.
