The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, Hon. George Opare Addo, has strongly condemned child marriage, describing it as “an act of wickedness.”
“It’s an act of wickedness for any father or mother to sit idle and allow a child below 18 to be forced into marriage based on poverty or whatsoever reason, it’s not right”
He called on all Ghanaians to join forces in fighting against this harmful practice, which disproportionately affects girls in the country, particularly in the northern regions.
The minister’s comments came after a meeting with 15-year-old Beatrice Laari Dammigu, a Form 3 student of Walewale Girls’ Model Junior High School, who visited his office as part of the International Day of the Girl Child celebration.

Beatrice shared the plight of girls in her community, highlighting issues such as child marriage, child abuse, and drug abuse among young people.
Hon. George Opare Addo assured Beatrice and Plan International Ghana, the organization that facilitated the meeting, of his commitment to championing the cause against child marriage.
The minister emphasized that his ministry would work tirelessly to support initiatives that promote the rights and well-being of girls and young people.
The Ministry for Youth Development and Empowerment is focused on five thematic areas, including:
- Human Resources Development: Equipping young people with skills and knowledge to excel in their chosen careers.
- Health and Well-being: Promoting the physical and mental health of young people.
- Youth Leadership: Empowering young people to take on leadership roles and make a positive impact in their communities.
- Youth Employment: Supporting young people in finding employment opportunities and entrepreneurship.
- Civil Responsibility: Encouraging young people to participate in civic activities and contribute to the development of their communities.
The fight against child marriage requires a collective effort from all stakeholders.
Hon. George Opare Addo’s strong stance against child marriage is a step in the right direction.
We must work together to create a society that protects and empowers girls and young people to reach their full potential.
