Accra Mayor Engages Hawkers Ahead Of Tuesday’s Decongestion Drive

As the city braces for a major decongestion operation on May 20, Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey has met with street hawkers in the Central Business District, pledging cleaner streets and fairer market policies under the government’s 24-hour economy plan.

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, on Saturday engaged directly with street hawkers in key parts of the Central Business District (CBD) to prepare them for a citywide decongestion exercise set to begin on Tuesday, May 20.

The move, according to city authorities, forms part of broader reforms aimed at reclaiming public space and enhancing urban sanitation.

Accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive for the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, the mayor walked through Kinbu Road, Kojo Thompson Road, Sempe Road, and several other high-traffic trading spots.

He urged traders to support the exercise and assured them that it was not an anti-trader campaign but part of efforts to make Accra a more livable and business-friendly city.

“This is not a war against hawkers,” Mayor Allotey told a crowd of vendors at Okaishie.

“It is a commitment to create a better, cleaner Accra—one where everyone, including traders, can thrive under clear rules and fair opportunities, especially as we move toward a 24-hour economy.”

The upcoming operation will target illegally occupied pavements, road shoulders, and pedestrian walkways that have long been obstructed by informal trading.

City officials say the first phase will focus on areas with the highest congestion and safety risks, before expanding to other parts of the metropolis in the coming weeks.

Mayor Allotey also hinted at plans to provide alternative trading spaces for affected vendors and promised ongoing dialogue.

“We are not just clearing streets—we are creating structure,” he emphasized. “The success of this plan depends on cooperation, and that starts with communication.”
