As Ghana prepares for its general elections on December 7, 2024, the National Election Security Task Force, led by Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has addressed the general public on road diversion ahead of the final rallies of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The rallies, scheduled for Thursday, December 5, 2024, will take place in Accra, with the NDC’s rally at Zurak Park in Madina and the NPP’s rally at the UG Sports Directorate Park, opposite the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

In order to avoid tension during this last minute of the whole pre-election process, the Police have decided to put in extra effort and resources to accommodate their stance. They have accordingly worked with them to come out with the following security arrangements to ensure the peaceful conduct of the rallies:

NPP supporters travelling from the Adenta direction are advised to turn left at Ritz Junction and proceed towards the American House, continuing on this route and connecting with Opkonglo through to the UG Sports Directorate park.

Also, those coming from the Dome direction should turn right at Haatso Junction and follow the route towards the GIMPA direction to access the University of Ghana.

NDC supporters travelling from Tetteh Quarshie are advised to turn right at Shiashie, along Lagos Avenue, connecting with Trinity Avenue to UPSA, and turn left on the UPSA road to the main Madina-Accra highway and turn right to their rally ground.

Those coming from the Dome direction should take a left turn at the KFC Junction and head towards the Wisconsin area. In addition, supporters coming from the Adenta direction can use any suitable route to access the rally location.

The North Legon and Memuna roads will be blocked to the general public to enable NDC party supporters to have space to undertake their rally.

According to task force, apart from the North Legon and Memuna roads, which will be closed, all other roads will remain open to normal traffic. However, due to the rallies, there is expected to be heavy traffic congestion. Commuters are therefore advised to consider using alternative routes to avoid delays.

The Inspector-General of Police has been leading the Security Task Force in engagements with stakeholders to guarantee a secure environment for the elections.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to follow designated routes and instructions from security personnel to avoid any disruptions.

The National Election Security Task Force has also put in place measures to prevent clashes between supporters of the two parties.

The task force is working closely with the parties, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to promote peaceful conduct during the rallies and the elections.

The Peace Pact signing ceremony, which took place on November 28, 2024, emphasized the need for peaceful conduct among political parties.

The ceremony was attended by presidential candidates, including NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, commended the candidates for signing the Peace Pact, which aims to promote peaceful conduct among political parties during the elections.

As Ghana approaches the December 7 polls, the National Election Security Task Force, led by Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, remains committed to ensuring a secure and peaceful environment for the elections.
