Dr. Caryn Agyeman Prempeh Urges Ghanaians to Exercise Caution with Food and Water Amid Floods

The Municipal Director of Health Services for La Dade-Kotopon, Dr. Caryn Agyeman Prempeh, has called on Ghanaians to be extra cautious about the food and water they consume following the recent widespread flooding in Accra.

According to Dr. Prempeh, floodwaters often contaminate food sources and drinking water with harmful bacteria, viruses, and other disease-causing organisms, increasing the risk of outbreaks of waterborne and foodborne illnesses such as cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhoea, and dysentery.

Dr. Prempeh stressed the importance of ensuring that food is thoroughly cooked and stored under hygienic conditions to prevent contamination. She further urged communities to keep their surroundings clean, properly dispose of waste, and clear blocked drains to reduce the spread of diseases.

She encouraged individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, or severe stomach pain to seek immediate medical attention rather than resorting to self-medication.

The health director also appealed to community leaders, local authorities, and residents to work together in promoting sanitation and public health measures during the flood season. She noted that collective efforts are essential in preventing disease outbreaks and protecting vulnerable populations, especially children and the elderly.

As heavy rains continue to affect several parts of Ghana, health authorities are reminding the public that observing proper hygiene and food safety practices remains one of the most effective ways to stay healthy during and after flooding.
