President John Dramani Mahama, in his capacity as head of state, visited the designated ceremonial site today to affix his signature to the official book of condolence opened in memory of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the wife of former President Jerry John Rawlings and a renowned advocate for women’s rights and social development in Ghana.
With solemn dignity, President Mahama extended the condolences of the government and the people of Ghana to the Rawlings family and to the nation at large. His gesture underscores the respect afforded to Nana Konadu’s contributions, from her tenure as First Lady through her active role in civil society and politics.
The signing ceremony comes amid a period of official mourning, during which flags are lowered and a range of memorial events are being held across the country to honour her life and service. It is expected that the condolence book will continue to be open to dignitaries, public officials and members of the public until the day of her state funeral.
In his brief remarks, President Mahama remarked that Nana Konadu “stood for dignity, women’s empowerment and national unity,” and affirmed that her passing leaves “a void in our national life but also a challenge for all of us to carry forward her values.”
As the country reflects on her legacy, the administration has also announced that arrangements are underway for the state funeral, which will include participation from local and international leaders, traditional authorities and civil society representatives.
