Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling party, has been granted bail following his questioning by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) regarding alleged involvement in illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey.” This development comes after Wontumi voluntarily appeared before the CID in response to their invitation.
After several hours in custody, Wontumi addressed the media, confirming that he provided a caution statement and expressed his commitment to fully cooperating with investigators.
He firmly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that all mining operations he conducted were legal and properly licensed. “I have always adhered to the laws governing mining activities,” he emphasized.
Wontumi has been released on bail with two sureties and is expected to report back to the CID for further questioning tomorrow.
The ongoing investigation centers on allegations of unauthorized mining within protected forest reserves, raising significant concerns about illegal mining practices in Ghana.
In a notable change in his legal representation, former Attorney General Godfred Dame has stepped in to lead Wontumi’s defense team after MP Andy Appiah-Kubi withdrew from the case.
Dame’s extensive legal experience is anticipated to strengthen Wontumi’s position as he navigates these serious allegations.
As this situation unfolds, political analysts are closely watching its potential impact on Wontumi’s career and the broader discussions surrounding environmental protection and regulatory enforcement in the mining sector.
