The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and several Black Stars players are reportedly unhappy following the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ decision to reduce the budget for Ghana’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Mali.
After reviewing the GFA’s initial proposal of $1.2 million, the Ministry approved a revised budget of $841,290, resulting in significant cuts to player bonuses, technical staff allowances, and logistical support.
Under the new arrangement, players’ winning bonuses were reduced from $10,000 to $5,000, while head coach Otto Addo’s bonus was cut from $20,000 to $10,000. Support staff bonuses were also lowered to $4,000 each.
Responding to the Ministry’s decision, the GFA issued a statement on Wednesday indicating that it would provide a full response after the qualifiers.
“The GFA will, in due course, provide clarifications to the issues raised,” the statement read.
Behind the scenes, sources within the Association have suggested growing concern over the timing and scale of the cuts, which they believe could affect team morale and preparation.
Meanwhile, according to a source close to the team, some Black Stars players are privately expressing dissatisfaction over the reduced bonuses. Although no player has made a public statement, the source noted that the mood in camp has shifted.
Clarifying the Ministry’s stance, Sports Minister Kofi Adams spoke on SportyFM this morning, defending the budget reduction. When asked whether players had raised concerns, he acknowledged the possibility of discontent but emphasized the broader national interest.
Looking ahead, Ghana will face Chad on September 4 in N’Djamena, followed by a home fixture against Mali on September 8 at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Black Stars currently lead Group I and are seeking qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As the qualifiers approach, attention remains on how the budget cuts may influence team performance and the relationship between the Ministry and the GFA.
