US Lifts Visa Restrictions On Ghana, Restores Five-Year Multiple Entry Privileges

Ghana has secured a major diplomatic victory as the United States reverses visa restrictions imposed earlier this year, restoring five-year multiple entry visas and expanded consular privileges for Ghanaian citizens.

In a significant breakthrough for Ghana’s international relations, the United States has officially lifted the visa restrictions placed on the country in July 2025. The reversal means Ghanaians are once again eligible for five-year multiple entry visas, alongside other enhanced consular benefits.

The good news was communicated directly to Ghanaian officials by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Ghanaian authorities have described the development as the result of months of intensive high-level diplomatic negotiations aimed at restoring full consular cooperation between the two nations.

It will be recalled that in July, the US imposed strict visa limitations on Ghana and several other countries, citing concerns over visa overstays, particularly among Ghanaian students.

At the time, applicants were only granted a maximum of three-month single entry visas, sparking widespread concern among travelers, students, and businesses.

With the reversal, officials say the move underscores a renewed spirit of partnership and trust between Accra and Washington. It is also expected to boost travel, education, and business exchanges between the two countries.

Observers believe this diplomatic win signals not only improved relations with the US but also Ghana’s growing influence on the global stage.
