“Technically, We Are Not Election Observers, We Engage Stakeholders To Prevent Crisis” — WAEF

Former Nigerian President Good Luck Jonathan, leader of the West African Elders Forum, has emphasized the delegation’s mission in Ghana ahead of the December 7 general elections.

Speaking at the National Police Headquarters in Accra, the former president clarified that their role is not that of technical election observers. Instead, their primary duty is to engage with stakeholders to prevent potential crises.

His excellency Good Luck Jonathan warmly received by Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and other security agency heads today, December 5, 2024 encouraged Ghanaians to uphold their democratic values.

He applauded Ghanaians for the history of peaceful political transitions, which serves as a model for democratic governance across Africa.

The West African Elders Forum delegation includes notable figures such as former Burkinabe Prime Minister Kadre Ouedraogo, Executive Director of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Ann Iyonu, and Special Adviser to Jonathan, Ikechukwu Eze.

The former president of Nigeria urged the Electoral Commission of Ghana and security agencies to remain independent and neutral, ensuring a credible polling process.

He also cautioned Ghanaians against violence, intimidation or actions that could undermine the electoral process’s integrity.

By promoting peaceful dialogue and cooperation, the West African Elders Forum aims to support Ghana’s democratic process and reinforce its reputation as a beacon of stability in the region.
