Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has issued a stern rebuke to the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, over comments the latter made concerning the violence that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun.
The rerun, which took place across 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency, was characterized by incidents of violence, including an alleged assault on Mavis Hawa Koomson, former Minister of Fisheries and New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP.
Commenting on the development, Sam George reminded the public of past incidents, particularly the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence in 2019.
He argued that those who justified or remained silent on that incident should not condemn the recent chaos, stressing that laws should apply equally to everyone.
However, Asiedu Nketia, speaking in an interview with UTV on Friday, July 18, 2025, strongly condemned the minister’s remarks.
According to the NDC Chairman, Sam George’s comments sounded like an attempt to justify violence, a stance he described as dangerous and undemocratic.
“This is wrong. Democracy has not given anyone the right to exact punishment apart from the state. And so, even if someone had slapped you, and you decided to revenge, you would also be committing a crime,” Mr. Nketia stated.
He cautioned the minister to be mindful of his current status and responsibilities, urging him to rise above personal sentiments and conduct himself with the decorum expected of a minister of state.
“I heard Sam George threatening that this is just the beginning, but I believe that since he’s been a victim of electoral violence before, if you put yourself in his shoes, you would be tempted to agree with his position.
But he’s now a minister of state, and so, he must speak and act as such to overcome his personal feelings. It’s painful though; even Jesus got angry at one point,” he added.
