President John Dramani Mahama has announced the suspension of all scheduled programmes and activities for the rest of the week as a mark of respect and mourning for the victims of the recent military helicopter crash.
The tragic incident claimed the lives of eight prominent individuals, including two government ministers and high-ranking security officials.
The victims include
- Hon. Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
- Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment and Science
- Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)
- Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer
- Manaen Twum Ampadu, Flight Officer
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Crew Member
The government and people of Ghana have been paying tribute to the victims, with President Mahama leading the condolence efforts.
Former President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo also extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as “profoundly shocking and saddening”.
The Ghana Armed Forces has confirmed the crash and is working to determine the cause. An investigation will be conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident
