President John Dramani Mahama has commenced a significant diplomatic mission, departing Ghana on Sunday, August 17, 2025, for official visits to Japan and Singapore as part of his administration’s strategic efforts to strengthen Ghana’s international partnerships and attract investment.
The two-nation tour represents a key component of the President’s foreign policy agenda, aimed at deepening bilateral relations, expanding trade opportunities, and fostering cooperation on shared development priorities between Ghana and these Asian economic powerhouses.
President Mahama’s first destination is Japan, where he will participate in the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IX), scheduled to take place in Yokohama from August 20-22, 2025.
This multilateral forum, which Japan has been leading since 1993, provides a crucial platform for promoting Africa’s development through international cooperation.
During his time in Japan, President Mahama is expected to address a plenary session focused on promoting trade and investment while also headlining a Ghana Presidential Investment Forum.
The forum will promote the government’s “Resetting Ghana” initiative, which aims to reposition the country as an attractive destination for international investment.
The TICAD participation aligns with Ghana’s broader diplomatic strategy of leveraging multilateral platforms to showcase the country’s investment potential and secure development partnerships.
Japan’s historical commitment to African development through TICAD presents an opportunity for Ghana to strengthen its relationship with one of the world’s leading economies.
Following his engagements in Japan, President Mahama will proceed to Singapore for a three-day state visit, where he is scheduled to hold high-level discussions with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong
The Singapore portion of the visit will include participation in the Africa-Singapore Business Forum, where President Mahama will address an investment roundtable aimed at attracting Singaporean businesses to Ghana.
Singapore’s position as a major financial hub and gateway to Southeast Asian markets makes it a strategic partner for Ghana’s economic diversification efforts.
The official statement from the Presidency emphasized that these visits are part of efforts to deepen Ghana’s bilateral relations, expand trade and investment opportunities, and strengthen cooperation on shared development priorities.
This aligns with the Mahama administration’s commitment to economic diplomacy as a cornerstone of foreign policy.
The timing of these visits is particularly significant as Ghana seeks to strengthen its international partnerships and attract foreign direct investment to support its development agenda.
Both Japan and Singapore represent important markets and sources of technology, expertise, and capital that could benefit Ghana’s economic transformation.
President Mahama’s engagement with these Asian partners reflects a broader strategy of diversifying Ghana’s international relationships beyond traditional partners, positioning the country to benefit from the dynamic growth in Asia-Pacific economies.
