President Mahama Launches ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ Poultry Initiative To Boost Local Production & Jobs

President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday unveiled the government’s new poultry revitalisation initiative, dubbed Nkoko Nkitinkiti, during a colourful ceremony in Kumasi.

The programme forms part of government’s broader Feed Ghana Programme and is designed not only to create jobs but also to reduce Ghana’s heavy dependence on imported frozen chicken.

Under the initiative, a total of three million poultry birds will be distributed nationwide to individuals, schools, and communities to encourage small-scale poultry production and strengthen local food systems.

Explaining the structure of the project, President Mahama said that in phase one, each beneficiary will receive 50 chicks, feed support, and technical guidance to ensure the sustainability of their poultry ventures.

He noted that the government intends to turn subsistence farming into self-sustaining, income-generating livelihoods for households across the country.

“It is with pride and a deep sense of national duty that I stand before you in this historic city of Kumasi, the birthplace of enterprise and innovation, to launch a programme that addresses the core of our national food security and inclusive growth agenda — the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Household and Backyard Poultry Production Initiative,” President Mahama declared.

He added that the initiative reflects government’s commitment to achieving food sovereignty while empowering citizens economically through practical agricultural support.

The Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme is expected to boost local poultry production significantly, create thousands of jobs, and reduce Ghana’s annual poultry import bill, aligning with the administration’s vision for a self-reliant agricultural economy.
